Always more to learn

Founder Joey Gleason has over 20 years experience in Portland's food & beverage scene. As a trained chef, Joey discovered her passion for roasting while running Redwing Cafe in SE Portland. She launched Marigold Coffee in 2009 to focus exclusively on coffee.

Constant refinement, continual enjoyment

We roast and cup each new coffee over and over till we get it right. Quality roasting requires constant adjustment, refinement and patience to stay focused on the details. Our technique is to draw out flavors by applying the scientific method of trial and error. There’s also an art to bringing out the magic of each new single origin or blend we create. There's no end point or fixed goal in coffee as the product always changes, and we change with it.

buckman coffee factory - our roastery & community

The Buckman Coffee Factory, where Marigold is located, is a shared-space facility; part roastery, part education hall and part event space.

The Buckman is also a kind of incubator for small coffee businesses and a place where coffee enthusiasts learn about coffee roasting, growing, trading and brewing.

Our event space (pre-COVID) is open to local and visiting coffee roasters, farmers and importers, and other coffee fanatics.

Coffee as connector

The coffee industry is enormous and enormously complicated. The part we play in making coffee –procurement and roasting—is but one link in the massive chain of human actions involved in the making of this miracle beverage. Knowing just how many people and livelihoods are involved in getting coffees to Marigold – the farmers, the pickers, the buyers, the millers, the shippers –with the love and labor involved in every step of the way—brings with it a sense of responsibility and awe. We feel lucky to play our small part in this exciting and ever evolving chain of interconnection. It’s what fuels our inspiration and keeps us engaged as a company.
